From Asheville to Glamsbjerg – A Hands-On 2 Weeks in Our Danish Fixer Upper

After months of dreaming, planning, and paperwork… we finally got the keys to our old house in Denmark—and just returned from our first official trip as Danish homeowners.

We were met with a home full of potential… and plenty of to-dos.

From the moment we stepped in, it was clear this house had been waiting for someone to bring it back to life. The light streaming through the windows, the garden waiting to be loved again, the charming old ceilings and beams—it all reminded me why we fell for it in the first place.

This wasn’t just a design trip—it was a family-powered work week. We’re so deeply grateful that our youngest son, his girlfriend, and my husband’s best friend and his daughter all flew out to Denmark to help us get this little house ready. From fixing broken windows to thrifting for furniture, sweeping cobwebs, and making supply runs—we couldn’t have done it without them.

This house isn’t just our project now—it’s becoming a shared memory.

Here’s what we tackled during this trip:

  • Replacing filling gaps in the old concrete tile roof (that was a dirty job!)

  • Fixing fascia boards and windows that are in the worst shape.

  • Meeting with a local plumber to get our hot water and heat working (and navigating that in Danish!)

  • Starting to plan out kitchen and bathroom updates

  • Peeling back layers—literally and figuratively—to see what’s under the surface

  • Setting up some cozy corners with just a few essentials so we can stay comfortably when we return.

And of course, we made time for some fresh baked bread from the local bakery and countryside drives to scout out some nearby beaches. Denmark in spring is a special kind of magic.

This house is already teaching us patience, adaptability, and how to slow down—something we both needed. It’s humbling, thrilling, and creatively energizing all at once. And yes, we’re documenting everything.

Follow our journey on Instagram @studioointeriors to see the behind-the-scenes: progress shots, product picks, renovation challenges, and maybe a few Danish design tips along the way.

We’re just getting started, but it already feels like a new chapter is taking shape. Stay tuned—next up: layout reconfigurations, limewashing dreams, and maybe a surprise flea market find or two.
